Do I have to be funny, witty, or clever before I take a class/workshop?
Not even a little bit. Just bring an open mind and a desire to have fun - you'll find the comedy will take care of itself. Improv is often best when the students bring their true selves to the performances.
What kind of prior experience do I need?
For a Level 1 - Improv Fundamentals class, absolutely none. Zero. Zip.
If you’ve taken an improv program in the past, and you want to skip a level, please contact us for permission.
What is included with the registration price?
The price includes six weekly classes and a final showcase on the seventh week.
What should I expect during class?
Expect to meet a lot of other people who are also might be slightly nervous and super excited. Your class will have between 7 and 14 students.
Expect to play a bunch of fun, silly games that simultaneously focus on performance skills and personal development. Expect to laugh a lot. (A whole lot.) Here are a few things you might want to know…
You might want to bring a water bottle.
Students often go out for drinks (or ice cream) after class. Instructors have a tradition to join after the first and sixth class.
We prioritize student’s feeling safe. You can step out of a scene at any time.
We begin with a quick check-in and end with kudos where students can say nice things about each other.
Can I try a class before I register?
You bet. The best way is to join us is to take an Intro to Improv Workshop.
How many students have you taught?
When we started in April 2016, Improv Cincinnati had 9 students. Since then we've taught 1000+ students through our classes, team building, and workshops.
How long are classes?
Classes consist of seven weekly sessions. Each session is two and a half hours long. The seventh class is always a performance showcase
Is there an age limit?
For our core curriculum classes, students must be 18 years or older. We offer an exception — teens age 14-17 may take the class with a fully paid and participating adult. We do not currently offer classes for kids.
What if I can’t afford the class?
We offer a Diversity Scholarship for certain affinity groups: BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and neurodiverse. We also offer credits for volunteering that can be used toward reducing the tuition. There’s also an option at check-out to break up the price into four equal payments.
What is the refund policy?
Because registered students are occupying a spot that could go to someone else, we do not offer refunds for class tuition for any reason.
If you need to cancel or drop before the class session begins, we’re happy to offer a class credit that you can use at any time in the future.
If you cancel or drop after the class session begins, you can retake the class at half price.
What if I miss a session?
We feel it’s very important to be at every class, so our policy is that you can’t miss more than two classes. We do offer the opportunity to swap into the class on the alternate day, but it must be within the same week.
What are the class expectations for students?
Keep it classy. Improv walks a fine line between letting creativity fall out of your brain and self censorship. That said, we do our best to avoid any humor that can be considered mean-spirited, sexist, racist, any-identity-phobic, creepy, or crude. Accidents happen, but strive to keep it classy.
Come clear headed. Avoid showing up to class tipsy, drunk, high, or otherwise impaired.
Be cool. Don’t be violent, threatening, or sexual to any student or instructor inside or outside of class. This rule includes improvised fictional behavior (see “Keep it classy” above).
Be respectful. Respect yourself, others, and any property in the training space.
