Elective: Sketch Writing 101
August 20 - September 24
Class meets for three hours, every Sunday, for six weeks. On the last day, September 24th, students will perform sketches for friends and family.
Love shows like Key & Peele, Kids in the Hall, and Saturday Night Live? Improv Cincinnati's Sketch Writing 101 class will teach you how to write, hone, and produce your own sketch comedy. Expanding your comedy repertoire will help you create the story you want to tell, as well as "find the funny" faster in improv scenes.
In this class, we will use a variety of short writing exercises and improv games to help create premise, characters, and dialogue for sketches. We will also cover basic script formatting and conduct table readings for writers to provide and receive constructive feedback. During weeks 4 and 5, we will finalize and cast sketches, as well as block and rehearse them for performance.
Requirements: Recommended for improvisers and writers with some performance experience. Must be 18+ years old.
Students must bring a notebook and pen/pencil to class. You will also need to bring a laptop computer, or have access to a computer, as sketches will need to be printed and copied for table readings.
Instructor: Mary O'Connell
For as long as she can remember, Mary has always gravitated to, and loved, all things comedy. A native of the Queen City, Mary graduated with a BA from the University of Cincinnati, where she studied English and Creative Writing. In 2012, Mary began taking improv workshops at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, and has since completed improv and sketch writing intensives at Second City in Chicago, as well as taken numerous classes and performed in shows with Improv Cincinnati. Over the years, Mary has also worked on short film projects in and around the Cincinnati area. In 2017, she wrote and performed sketches at a workshop led by one of her comedy heroes, Kevin McDonald (Kids in the Hall), and it was awesome.
